I’m grateful to have received the Linkedin expert designation, which suggests that people can come to me for advice and feedback on their projects and initiatives. One of the questions that I receive consistently and almost daily relates to leadership. Specifically, “how can I increase my leadership presence?”

Now, granted this is not a simple thing and there are several moving parts related to leadership and carrying it out for long-term success. Let’s dive in and take a look at five habits that are sure to increase your leadership presence and create raving followers along the way!

Know your craft. Do not try to fake it until you make it. Why? Because you will be found out. Sure, your followers may not say anything to you because your the boss, but that is a unsustainable type of leadership that allows cracks in the organization’s long-term foundation.

When you learn your craft and keep learning it, you will become more confident in the discharge of your responsibilities. Confidence creates opportunities for feedback and the ability to add to the conversation when engaging others. As you engage with others, you will all learn together. This cannot happen if you are too busy trying to fake it and not be found out.

Value Wins the Day

Try to add value at every turn. In other words, if there are problems, conflict, or if clarity is needed be the person that offers suggestions, not mandates, but simple suggestions that convey an understanding of the situation. Be fair and only add another voice to the mix if absolutely necessary. Always be ready to offer input without forcing it.

Be a Conduit

Give “it” away with the intent to empower others. It means the fullness of who you are when in a work setting. Be fully present, be prepared, be diligent to offer something of value to the project, task, or simple conversation. When you are consistent in this regard others will look to you for affirmation thereby creating influence.

Keep Your Word

Listen up…this one is a “big deal.” Do what you say you will do, no exceptions. Followers look for consistency anchors during, before and after the storms that take place during the course of a business’ growth and development. I know its hard to fathom this, but the mantle of leadership is heavy…keep your word.

Be Authentic in All Things

Do not be a Phony Bologna! I thought you may like that wording change compliments of my daughter’s. Be you in all things, for example…dress the part that you have in your mind if protocol does not already exist. That’s whatever it looks like for you. If you are more comfortable in a suit, good, wear one. If you are more confident in a skirt, good wear it or if none of the above, jeans and t-shirt should be your flow. The main thing is to be authentic to yourself and demonstrate the same to those you seek to influence for a positive outcome.

Final Takeaway

At the end of the day, people will gravitate to your leadership because of the substance of who you are and what path you create for them as you lead. This type of leadership is the stuff of legend, not stories of leaders who were dictatorial or autocratic. Be the best version of you as you lead and guide others to their own greatness. Oscar Wilde said it best, “Be the best you because everyone else is taken.” Take my advice and watch what happens.
