The instructor had the stern look of someone who knew the gravity of the situation and expected a no-nonsense buy-in from all participants. After all instructions had been given and harnesses had been fastened and secured, I was ready to begin my climb. However, despite all of the pre-excursion preparation and instruction, nothing would truly prepare me for what I was about to experience other than the event itself.
Requirement of Mental Toughness
As I made the somewhat shaky and unsteady climb on a ladder without mooring to the advanced platform of the ropes course, I was reminded of just how alone it can feel as you venture into uncharted territory or attempt something new. Over 100 feet off the ground and approaching an obstacle that would require me to let go in order to go forward, I realized the lesson that was to be learned that day. Mental toughness is required in order to rise to the occasion and advance you toward success…no matter the obstacle.
Some would argue that mental toughness is not only required, but it is crucial if you are going to outpace or overtake your competitors. Mental toughness is the conditioning of the mind to deal with existing or potentially negative circumstances which could possibly derail your forward momentum toward a goal or possibly limit your ability to overcome barriers to success.
Three Things for Mental Toughness
Based upon research from the military, there are linkages between brain functioning and the ability to handle stress, which allows some individuals to handle outside stressors and experience greater levels of mental toughness. Regardless of the context, there are three things that need to be present in order to cultivate or experience the presence of mental toughness. Those three things are Commitment, Control and Challenge.
1. Commitment suggests that you are committed to the outcome, and believe in what you are seeking to accomplish.
2. Control intimates that you believe you can impact your fate and influence a positive outcome.
3. Challenge is welcomed and the presence of said challenge creates a willfulness that makes you want to stand in the face of adversity.
It is clear, the presence or the ability to increase your capacity for mental toughness is a game changer for both a leader and a follower because it suggests adaptability to situational stressors while still experiencing success. For this reason, make it a point to determine where you are in your mental toughness quotient and commit to its development going forward.
