A Champion’s Mindset
When it comes to leading others and achieving success in business, we can all learn a lot from the concept of being a champion. In antiquity, athletic champions were often associated with embodying or possessing “ARETE” or what the ancient Greeks described as a high level virtue that would portend (predict) success in both the short-term and long-term. Let me share two reasons why this virtue can serve as a great blueprint for our lives both professionally and personally.

In the ancient Panhellenic games, athletes would literally give their all (sometimes their lives) in pursuit of victory. Not because they wanted praise from their fellow man, but because they believed in the vision for the games and how the concept of ARETE was so woven into the fabric of their being.
How does this translate into business for you and I? Well, if you are willing to do the work to become an expert at your craft or stay up to date with the most effective tools that create a greater likelihood for your business success, you too are buying into the practices of a champion and giving your all in pursuit of victory. Unfortunately, many people do not understand the sacrifice it takes when becoming an expert or growing their business during tough times and prosperous times, so they may start strong and taper off before emerging victorious.
Good and Bad Times Are Part of Success
No matter who you are or what type of business you lead, there will be good times and there will be tough times. The question becomes…how will you weather the adversity during both phases of your growth. Yes, I said growth. The concept of ARETE suggests that no matter your circumstances you must still rise to meet the challenge that stands between you and ultimately achieving success. Not only does that require growth, but it must be seasoned with a certain level of maturity that only comes from experience.
So remember, we are each on a path during this lifetime. A path that will require something from us in order to achieve success. Are you ready to give your all in both good times and bad while on this path? History tells a great story of those who were willing and able to stay the course on their path to success….
