The Business of Speaking
In the first of a seven part series, I share with you my proven and time tested method on “How to Speak Life & Create Wealth™.”
The gentleman was the CEO from one of the largest publicly traded companies in the world. While I knew his question was not meant from a negative place, it still sent shivers down my spine. He had simply asked me, “How are you any different from all of the other people that are seeking an opportunity to work with our company?”
It’s Not About Skill Set
At the time, I was at a loss for words and quite frankly my response was to immediately point out what I could do and the skills that I possessed rather than illuminate to him how I could best address the company’s pain or any challenges they were facing.
Your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)
You see when you are in the business of speaking, consulting or training, it does not matter how many skills that you possess or how well that you speak, in fact, you are supposed to do that as a professional. The key is found in the intangibles or how you are best suited to skillfully address the challenge or needs of the organization. That’s why as a speaker you must identify your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) or the thing that is uniquely found in you and you alone as it relates to adding immediate value to your involvement in a change effort or event, etc. One thing I have found over the years is that people do not spend enough time processing or unearthing their USP and therefore venture down the wrong path as they build their speaking business. Find your USP and then you will be able to thrive in perpetuity.
