This Week’s Focus Point:

What if you had the very thing that could release someone into greatness? What if you had the formula to help someone achieve lasting and profound positive change? Would you hesitate to freely give it, or would you rush to overcome any obstacle in order to unlock this opportunity for them? These reflective questions are tied to my own thoughts about providing what is described as, “The Blessing.”

Recipe for Lasting Success

The profound opportunity to help someone achieve their goals and experience support while doing so is a recipe for lasting success and a blueprint that can be duplicated by others. As a father, I have the privilege of speaking into the lives of my children and providing what has been described as, “The Blessing” or the imparting of support and encouragement to remove any potential obstacles that could possibly sabotage my children enroute to their goals. In antiquity, or the biblical record, “The Blessing” was coveted by those who desired to ensure a positive pathway for those they cared for or loved.

Five Practices

Gary Smalley, a noted family counselor suggests “The Blessing” is synonymous with five practices. (a) Meaningful touch, (b) Spoken words, (c) High Value expression, (d) Picturing a special future, and (e) An active commitment. These five practices lay the foundation for a person to open the door for someone to step into greatness because each practice builds upon the next and provides deep roots for sustainable behaviors. The concept of “The Blessing” can also be applied to an organizational context. The Leaders that are able to unlock greatness in their followers by freely engaging in the fives practices offered by Smalley helps remove uncertainty and pushes followers on to a track destined for greatness.

How do you intentionally remove obstacles in your followers way? How often do you ask if there is anything impeding your team’s progress?
